11-time All-Ireland winners to feature in intriguing double-header as senior championship heats up

Birr will host the double-header with Cork taking on Monaghan before Galway face Waterford.

BIRR WILL BE the venue for an intriguing double-header this weekend as the TG4 All-Ireland senior championship starts to heat up.

The opening round of fixtures produced some exciting clashes at the weekend, with Mayo recording an exceptional win over Cavan to put a difficult week behind them in which 12 players left the panel.

Elsewhere, Westmeath scored a last-gasp free against Waterford to snatch a victory while Kerry got the better of Tipperary and Armagh and Monaghan played out a draw.

This weekend, there’s another batch of interesting ties to look forward to, including a double-header at Birr featuring 11-time All-Ireland champions Cork.

Ephie Fitzgerald’s charges will take on Monaghan in the first game [Throw-in, 3pm], while Connacht champions Galway will clash with Waterford directly after that [Throw-in, 4.45pm].

Cork will be looking to continue their winning form after reclaiming the TG4 Munster Ladies senior football title in June, while their Ulster opponents will be keen to push on for a result following that draw against Armagh.

Elsewhere, All-Ireland and Leinster champions Dublin will face Cavan in Dunleer and Castlerea will host the meeting of Donegal and Tipperary.

There are also intermediate fixtures down for decision this weekend with a double-header scheduled to take place in Kinnegad on Saturday.

First up is Roscommon’s meeting with Meath before Clare do battle with Kildare.

There are three more intermediate games to look forward to on Sunday with another double-header penciled in for Clane, Co. Kildare featuring Laois, Longford, Wexford and Offaly.

Down and Wexford will battle it out at St Margaret’s, Dublin in the other Sunday fixture.
